The word "Eid" (عيد) means "feast," "festival," or "holiday" in Arabic. Islam has two major Eids, each carrying deep spiritual significance.
The Festival of Breaking the Fast
عيد الفطر
Eid al-Fitr marks the joyous end of Ramadan — the Islamic holy month of fasting. After 29 or 30 days of fasting from dawn to sunset, Muslims around the world celebrate with prayers, feasting, and gratitude.
The Festival of Sacrifice
عيد الأضحى
Eid al-Adha honours the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who demonstrated ultimate obedience to God. It coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the largest gathering of people on Earth.
"Every people has a festival, and this is our festival."
— Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Sahih al-Bukhari
Eid dates are based on the lunar Islamic (Hijri) calendar and may vary by 1–2 days depending on moon sighting in your region.
عيد الفطر
Marked the end of the blessed month of Ramadan. Muslims broke their 30-day fast with prayer, charity, and celebration.
عيد الأضحى
The Festival of Sacrifice, coinciding with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Observed with special prayers, Qurbani, and sharing meals with those in need.
Did you know? The Islamic lunar year is about 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, which means Eid shifts earlier each year, cycling through all seasons over approximately 33 years.
From ancient traditions to global customs, explore what makes Eid so special.
Eid is observed by over 1.8 billion Muslims across 180+ countries — one of the largest religious celebrations on Earth.
Because the Islamic calendar is purely lunar, Eid shifts approximately 10–11 days earlier every Gregorian year, cycling through all seasons.
Traditionally, Eid begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon. Many communities also rely on astronomical calculations.
Elders give children gifts of money or presents called "Eidi" as a token of love and blessing — a treasured tradition across cultures.
The Eid prayer is offered in congregation shortly after sunrise, featuring 6 extra takbeers. It's held at mosques or large open grounds.
Before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, every Muslim must give Zakat al-Fitr — charity to ensure the poor can also celebrate.
Every culture has signature Eid dishes: Sheer Khurma in South Asia, Kahk in Egypt, Maamoul in the Levant, and Baklava in Turkey.
Wearing new or freshly washed clothes on Eid is a Prophetic tradition (Sunnah), symbolising renewal, joy, and gratitude to God.
During Eid al-Adha, the sacrificed animal's meat is divided into thirds: one for the family, one for friends/neighbours, one for the poor.
Eid al-Adha coincides with the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage. Pilgrims in Mecca perform the Qurbani as part of the Hajj rites.
"Eid Mubarak" (عيد مبارك) means "Blessed Eid." Other greetings include "Eid Said" (Happy Eid) and "Kul Aam Wa Antum Bikhair."
Muslims recite the takbeerat — "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah" — from the night before until after the Eid prayer.
While the spirit of Eid is universal, every culture adds its own beautiful flavour — from South Asian sweetmeats to Turkish candy feasts and African communal prayers.
